Houseboats in Amsterdam

While I was living in Amsterdam 12 years ago, I was always very intrigued by the numerous house boats in Amsterdam moored along the canals, but never got the opportunity to actually have a nosy around in one.

So when I was looking for a hotel in Amsterdam, I got REALLY excited when I found a guesthouse on a houseboat. It's called Bed on Board which is run by a lovely Belgian/Dutch couple.

The boat is not technically a boat, meaning that it will never set off in the open seas. It doesn't actually have a motor or a wheel, however;  this modern wooden construction does actually float on the canal. The room is tastefully decorated in modern style and you have your own private en-suite bathroom. Breakfast is not included, but there are lots of places  around or within bike radius where you can have a delicious Dutch breakfasts.(Bikes can be rented from B on B).

To keep the boat theme going on this trip, my travel buddy and I also paid a visit to the Houseboat Museum on the Prinsengracht. It gives a good insight into what it was like to live on a houseboat back in the day. And let me tell you, it's not quite the same comfort as the Bed on Board guesthouse we were staying at. The sleeping area on this houseboat would only be called comfortable by a 4 year old. Grown-ups end up with a lot of bruises on their heads.

To finish off the Amsterdam boat themed weekend in style, we booked ourselves a canal tour on the Pannenkoekenboot, or Pancake Boat in English. For 23.50 Euro you get to see Amsterdam from the water and eat pancakes till you can eat no more. Followed by ice cream. And we literally couldn't eat no more...

You can find more info on Bed on Board's Facebook page.

On the houseboat museum's website.

And on the pancake boat's webpage.
