Last week my friend invited me to come to The Chicken Shop in Kentish Town. When I heard the name, I was expecting something slightly more upscale than Missouri Fried Chicken on the highstreet, but The Chicken Shop is nothing like that. If anything it's more like the hipper and much trendier younger brother of Nando's.
It's located under Pizza East which has opened up shop in Kentish Town, which, like the Chicken Shop belongs to the equally hip Soho House chain.
According to the latest restaurant trend, you can't book and tables are assigned to a first come first serve basis. We arrive quite early on a Friday night and were seated at the bar straight away. Now we picked the bar, because we thought it was fun to watch the chefs at work. It was, but it was not so much fun to see the bits of chopped chicken fly and land on my freshly washed, silk shirt. Plus it was hot, oven hot.
That aside, we had a great meal. The menu is short and sweet. You can choose between a big, medium or small piece of chicken and some sides. We went for a half chicken to share with some crinkle cut fries on the side and an avocado salad, which we washed down with some local Camden beer.
For dessert we could choose between deep filled apple pie, zesty lemon pie or a chocolate brownie. We told the waiter we would share the apple pie, but he seemed to think we needed to fatten up a bit and came back with the pie pan and gave us about a third of the entire pie. As full as we were, we couldn't possible go pie that good go to waste.
