Of course the main goal to go to Zanzibar is to work on your tan on lie on the island's picture perfect beaches. But if that's too relaxing for you, here are some other things you can check out.
- Snorkel or Dive
The under water world is fantastic around Zanzibar and if you're lucky you might meet some turtles. There are plenty of operators offering snorkel and diving trips on the island and most of them include equipment hire and a BBQ lunch on the beach. These tours also give you pretty views onto the spice island itself.
- Visit a Spice Plantation
A holiday to Zanzibar wouldn't be complete without a visit to a spice plantation. Once part of the spice route, the island is still abound with spice plantations that offer tours. It's really interesting to find out where the spices you use to cook your daily meals actually come from.

- Wander Around Stone Town
The capital of Zanzibar and birthplace of Freddy Mercury is a wonderful town to discover. Its myriad of small alleys and Arab architecture give it a mysterious atmosphere. The food market that takes place in the evenings is something not to be missed either and a great place to mingle with the locals and taste Zanzibari delicacies..
- Visit Mnarani Turtle Conservation
It's a small conservation centre, but it's worth the visit as you learn about the importance of the conservation project and the best part is that you get to hold and feed the turtles.

- Eat Fresh Fish on the Beach
We stayed in Nungwi where the beach is lined with small hotels and improvised BBQ restaurants. We loved having BBQed fish caught earlier that day accompanied by surprisingly cheap cocktails, while watching the sun set in the Indian Ocean.
