Manchester’s got a reputation for being a shopper’s Walhalla, but I found that some heavenly coffee shops in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.
Fig + Sparrow
Besides serving great coffee, healthy breakfasts and scrumptious sandwiches, Fig + Sparrow on Oldham Street doubles as a shop that sells local and international crafts and works of art. You can also find artsy cards and prints here. Besides showcasing the creations of artists from Manchester and all over the world, it’s a great place to get your own creative juices going while sipping on a soy latte of loose leaf rooibos tea.
Blue Daisy Café
A bit further along Oldham Street you’ll find Blue Daisy Café. It looks as bohemian as it sounds: very flowery and colourful with an eclectic collection of furniture and knickknacks strewn about. The homemade style food comes in generous portions and affordable prices. Scrambled eggs for under a fiver. Where else do you get that these days?
Eastern Bloc on Stevenson Square is a bit of a legendary establishment in Manchester as before it moved to its current location it was a famous drum ‘n bass, techno and dubstep record shop. It welcomed many famous DJs and musicians through its doors back in its hayday. Now it is a café that also sells vinyls with an edgy atmosphere. I can’t say much about their food, but their hand-roasted coffee and homemade cakes tasted pretty good.
