In my attempt to eat around the world without leaving London, I've ended up in the Balkan. I have to say that it was incredibly hard to find a place that serves food from the countries that once made up Yugoslavia. Other than Taste Croatia at Borough market which sells fab fig based oils and vinegars, all I could find was this random Serbian pub in Battersea called Paya and Horse.
It's located on the yukkie side of Battersea Park Road, but form what I could tell on their website, things get really lively on weekends. Feeling a bit intimidated by the prospect of finding a whole pig on a roast on a Saturday night, I went for lunch and opted for their 'home mede (sic) hot dog and a pint for a fiver' offer signposted by the side of the road.
The pub had just opened up when I walked in, so I was the only punter in there. Since it took a while for the staff to notice me, I had a good look around the place.
Inside it looked as random as it did from the outside. The interior looked like any well-respected Wetherpersons pub I'd ever been to; outdated furniture and carpet that could do with replacing. The only difference being that there are paintings of the characteristic owner, Paya, hanging on the walls. There was no one in there so can't say much of the atmosphere. I leafed through the laminated menu of a variety of Serbian dishes that all sounded very wonderful and exotic to me. However, as I didn't quite feel within my comfort zone, I went for the Serbian hot dog and a pint. Quick and easy.
Having said that, the hot dog was delish. It was more a chorizo dog than a standard American dog and the pint was refreshing as well. But, to be completely honest with you, I don't think Paya and Horse will be my new local. Any time soon.
