As a New Yorker living in Astoria I never bothered to check out the Socrates Sculpture Park. So all the more reason to go and have a look as a tourist.
After wandering around my old hood and checking out my old haunts as well as some new ones, I walked all the way from Steinway Street and along lively 30th Avenue to the East River where this park is located.
Socrates Sculpture Park was founded in 1986 and provides artists the space to create and exhibit large-scale sculpture and multi-media installations in a green environment. They put on exhibitions just like the 'normal' indoor museums and especially during the summer months they organise lots of other artsy festivals, movie screenings and performances.
I spent a good while in the park walking amongst the interesting pieces of art and enjoying the amazing view of Manhattan's skyline from a bench.
The park is open every day of the week. To see what's happening, check out their
website.
